Abstract : Because of the growing problem facing children and families in Zambia, Strengthening Community Participation for the Empowerment of Orphans and Vulnerable Children (SCOPE-OVC) was created in 1999. The goal of SCOPE-OVC is to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on OVC in Zambia. In order to measure changes in the situation faced by children and families affected by the loss of adult family members since the establishment of SCOPE-OVC, a multiphase evaluation of the situation was undertaken. The second phase of the evaluation, conducted in February 2001, was a baseline assessment of households caring for OVC. This report is the analysis of the OVC household baseline survey. Key variables included education, household relationships, household access to support services, and psychosocial and emotional well-being. (Author's modified)
