Abstract : The author examines the practice of fostering children in traditional African societies using a case study of Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The circulation of children among residences other than their place of birth and its impact on the structure of the urban population are discussed. Residence and family characteristics of households with foster children are described using data from a 1978 survey. (ANNOTATION)
