Résumé : In Latin America, there is an extremely high rate of unwanted pregnancies and clandestine abortions. As a result, induced abortion is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality in the region. In view of this, Catholics for a Free Choice/Latin America promotes women's right to choose as competent moral agents and their right to disagree with the Church's positions as an ethical option. The members defend access to safe and effective contraceptive methods and abortion as expressions of freedom of conscience and as fundamental human rights of all people. It is noted that for the last 20 years Latin American and Caribbean women have taken part in the struggle for sexual and reproductive rights, committing themselves to the continuance of forming and fostering the liberating Church and recognizing that, in order to fulfill this mission, changes in the existing structure of the Catholic Church are essential.
