Résumé : The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the self-administration of 600mg of Misoprostol by the vaginal route up to three doses every 8 hours in a period of 24 hours so as to induce abortion in up to 9-week pregnancy. A group of pregnant volunteers with gestation times ranging from 35 to 63 days participated in the study. All the patients who had abortion received an additional dose of 600mg of Misoprostol. A patient decided not to continue in the study after the first interview but her data were included in the general characteristics of the sample. The method was considered to be efficient when it caused complete abortion without requiring further surgical or causing secondary effects. Fifty seven patients (64%) had complete abortion. The time of expulsion was 7,4 ± 3,8 h (median 7,2h, range 3-20h) for all the patients who had abortion in the first 24 hours of Misoprostol administration. Thirsty two cases failed, 28 were due to problems with the method after administering the third doses and 4 cases were due to medical decision. The obtained results in this study allowed us to conclude that the dose of 600mg of Misoprostol is not the adequate dose to produce high or acceptable abortive efficacy.

Uso de 800 mg de Misoprostol para inducir el aborto temprano nbsp;- nbsp;Use of 800 mg of Misoprostol to induce early abortion

Résumé : Misoprostol is similar to prostaglandins with uterotonic properties. A group of 141 patients with gestational time under 70 days received 3 doses of 800 mg of Misoprostol every 48 hours. Failure was defined by the need of performing a surgical abortion and success by the complete removal of the outcome. Generally speaking, 132 cases (93,6%) had normal abortion, 9 cases failed for 6,4%. The decrease in hemoglobin rates was statistically significant (p=0,001) but without clinical impact, before treatment: 11,9 mg/dL with standard deviation=1,19 and after treatment: 11,1 with a SD=1,20. There were no statistically significant differences among success rates and failure rates in relation to parity, pregnancy, previous abortions, race or age, but they were found in pregnancies over 9 weeks (p=0,01). The third dose of Misoprostol showed very low efficiency. The benefits that the reduction of treatment time plus the use of more frequent doses of this medicine, combined with different ways of administration, might bring are under research.
