Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama have scarce maternal and reproductive health services, high maternal mortality, limited reproductive choices and a great risk from unsafe abortion. This document describes Ipas activities to address these issues.

Abortion is permitted in every state in cases of rape, and in several states when there are sever congenital defects and when the life or health of the woman is in danger. Though abortion in Peru is legally permitted only to save the woman's life or to prevent serious injury to her health, incidence of abortion is high. It is estimated that five out of every 100 women of reproductive age have abortions each year; almost half of the women who undergo an abortion suffer complications.
