Resumen : This report sets forth the national laws and policies in key areas of reproductive health and empowerment of women in nine Latin American and Caribbean countries; namely, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico and Peru. Each country is discussed separately, but the organization of information is provided uniformly in four main sections to enable regional comparisons. The first section of each chapter briefly lays out the basic legal and political structure of the country being analyzed, providing critical framework within which to examine the laws and policies affecting women's reproductive rights. The second section of each chapter details the laws and policies affecting specific reproductive health and right issues. It reviews governmental health and population policies, with an emphasis on general issues relating to women's status. It also examines laws and policies regarding contraception, abortion, sterilization, HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. In the third section of each chapter, it provides general insights into women's legal status in each country. It describes laws and policies regarding marriage, divorce, custody of children, property rights, labor rights, access and rules regarding credit, access to education, and the right to physical integrity, including laws on rape, domestic violence, and sexual harassment. The final section of each chapter focuses on the reproductive health and rights of the adolescents. The final segment discusses laws and policies relating to reproductive health, marriage, sexual crimes, and sex education.
